More than 5 million tax returns were filed through late Saturday evening, the department said, a day before the ITR deadline or filing deadline for the 2021-22 fiscal year.

The department issued a public message via its official Twitter account asking taxpayers, largely individuals and employees, to file their returns by the July 31 due date.

The CBDT has also issued an order stating that Aaykar Seva Kendras (ASKs) or Income Tax Assistance Centers across the country will remain open on Sunday and that additional receipt counters will be opened as appropriate. to “facilitate the filing of tax returns by taxpayers”.

Officials said the Ministry of Finance and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which oversee the policy of the tax department, continuously monitor the ITR filing exercise.

A “war room” of technical experts working on the portal and the CBDT social media team that collects individual and public responses to the case are working together 24/7, a senior officer said. PTI.

The officer said issues with the e-filing portal are handled quickly and every question raised by taxpayers is answered.

Asked about requests made on social media and through representations sent to the CBDT to extend the July 31 ITR filing deadline, officials said they were looking to ensure “filings go smoothly until the deadline and that nothing more worries them”. at present.”

The ministry’s Twitter account responded to some posts that the e-filing website was not working by stating, “As informed by our team, the e-filing portal is working properly. According to the updated data till July 28, around 4.05 crore ITR were filed and among these, the number of declarations verified/validated by taxpayers stood at 3.09 crore.

The number of returns that could be processed among these was 2.80 crores and of those 2.41 crores or 86% were processed, according to the data.

Electronic filing of ITRs by various categories of taxpayers is done through the web portal — “http://incometax.gov.in”.

Approximately 5.89 crore of RTI was deposited in the last time or fiscal year 2020-21 before the extended due date of December 31, 2021.
