While pausing before confirming he would be pushing for a permanent deal, Neilson admitted it was something he had thought about.

“It’s the same with all the guys who are on loan or out of contract,” he told the Edinburgh Evening Newstitle of sister of Wigan Today. “It’s not really the time to talk about it.

“We’re going to focus on the games and the January window and then we’ll see where we are in February or March.

“It’s something we’ll probably deal with towards the end of the season.

“Stephen has done a good job for us and he’s here until the summer.

“I think he still has time left on his contract at Wigan. We are focused on recruiting.”

Humphrys still has over 18 months left on the contract he signed after joining Latics from Rochdale in the summer of 2021.

He scored seven goals in 49 appearances last season to help the Ligue 1 title.

But he slipped down the pecking order after the summer signing of Ashley Fletcher, following the January arrival of Josh Magennis.
