University of Idaho: Police identify 4 students found dead outside campus

Four University of Idaho students who were found dead Sunday night in a house near campus have been identified, the Moscow City Police Department said Monday.

The students killed were Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho.

Moscow police said they were investigating the deaths as homicides, but provided no further information about what happened. Monday noon, no suspect was in custody. Anyone with information about the case has been asked to contact police.

“The Moscow Police Department and the City of Moscow are deeply saddened for the families of these individuals, classmates and friends, and for our community during this time,” the police department said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected by this incident.”

Moscow Mayor Art Bettge called the students’ deaths “senseless acts of violence”.

“This tragedy reminds us that senseless acts of violence can happen anywhere, anytime, and we are not immune to such occurrences here in our community,” the mayor said. “Today we mourn those who have been lost and those they leave behind. Let us come together to support each other and be there for each other, as we mourn as a community.”

Police say “there is no continuing threat”, the university tweeted Sunday without further details.

Officers responded to a call for an unconscious person shortly before noon Sunday and discovered the four bodies, the The Moscow Police Department said in a press release.

“It is with profound sadness that I share with you that the university was informed today of the deaths of four University of Idaho students living off campus who were allegedly victims of homicide,” said University President Scott Green in a statement to the campus community. .

The students killed were also implicated on campus, according to the university. Chapin was a freshman majoring in recreation, sports, and tourism management who was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. CNN contacted Sigma Chi.

Mogen was a senior marketing specialist and Goncalves was a senior majoring in general studies, according to the university.

Guidance will be provided on campus to students and employees through Tuesday, the school said.

The tragic discovery came as another US college campus – the University of Virginia in Charlottesville – is reeling three students were shot and killed Sunday. The suspected shooter, identified as a UVA student, was taken into custody Monday morning after an hour-long manhunt.

At the University of Idaho, Monday in-person and online classes are canceled and are scheduled to resume Tuesday.

“We are grateful for the support from the community and the continued efforts of the police department. The university is committed to supporting students and families during this difficult time,” said Green.
